Most days, I enjoy working in a daily paper. I am in the loop about every local thing that happens, about the political situation, I see a lot of events and meet a lot of (usually interesting) people.
Tuesday was not such a day. Tuesday showcased everything unprofessional about journalists and photojournalists. Tuesday, every paper and tv station from Serbia descended upon this village near Novi...

Last weekend, a few friends invited me to a festival of French-language theater that they organized. I was ecstatic, even though I don’t speak a word of French - good theater is hard to come by in this town, and these girls are so full of enthusiasm and love for what they do that I had to come by and see them.
I was in for a treat - 4 shows, 3 of them with subtitles(!), all by theater...

Analog love
I’m a child of the digital era. I’ll refrain from quoting Bad Religion here, but it’s pretty much correct - I’ve been raised on computers and video games. Ever since grade school, I’ve spent more than 2-3 hours in front of a computer every day. And, yes, my father used to do a lot of analog photography when he was younger, but all his gear was broken by the time I was...

Mono
More music stuff. This Wednesday, Mono played in Belgrade and I would have been crazy to miss it. They played before less than 300 people and it was divine. They put in a great 90-minute performance, no encore, not a single word spoken, only the hypnotic quiet-quiet-quiet-loud-quiet-NOISE that they do so well, their melodies just barely skirting the incoherent, drowning noise, but never quite...

self-portrait of an aspiring photojournalist on a...
It’s been snowing hard these last few days, and some jerk stole my hat when I was en route to an assignment on Wednesday.
I’m actually really enjoying this cold weather and the snowstorms. And, with this much energy now, I can’t help but wonder how I’m going to survive springtime. I’m guessing I won’t sleep a lot when the weather starts clearing up.

On music photography
There’s a lot of aspects of photojournalism that excite me. Real journalism-type stuff where one explores an issue, protests and angry people, hell, even plain street photography, illustrating daily life in the town. And then there’s music photography.

It might be because my daily life is never without a soundtrack, or...

Another slow news day. Even the protests have stopped due to ice, cold and boredom. That leaves me bored at home, with 2 hours to go before a handball game I should go to. Our paper is, it seems, small enough that it doesn’t have a sports photographer. It has one other dude and me doing whatever is necessary. It is also small enough that we don’t have a photo editor. But I’m not...

A sort of beginning
The main purpose of this blog is pretty selfish. It’s going to be an exploration of photojournalism, war photography and my attraction to (obsession with?) it, primarily to try and understand it myself, see if I can put it on paper (well, on a hard-drive somewhere) and explain it coherently. I’m hoping this might be interesting to other people too.
There are several steps that I...

Today's been slow
Working at the local paper has been all good so far. There are days when I have to work my ass off, run all over town to get stories, sit in boring meetings and talk down violent, drunk idiots. Those are awesome.
And then there’s days like this. It’s -10 outside and there’s no work to be had. So, instead of sitting in the office, I’m at home, relaxing. Instead of writing...

Let's pretend I will be able to keep this up for...
I’m horrible at keeping stuff like this updated. And I’m usually horrible at having anything to say. Still, here goes, a blog potentially about photography, me, post-rock, my day-to-day crap, stupid stuff found on the internets, posts on things I find annoying/infuriating and other typical blogey cliches.
Here’s the stuff I usually do. I’m a pretend-photojournalist (as...
